2008 Focus ST Drivers Driveshaft

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I have a low mileage 2008 Focus ST225 (50K) that has recently had a PumaBuild Forged Engine which is mapped to around 340BHP, i believe the drivers driveshaft is starting to click as when i give the car beans on a corner it clicks however when i go round a round about without and power it stays silent. its only when power is put down.

Nooow for the replacement part, Ford want £777.60 with a returnable £120 for a genuine part, has anyone used any other manufacturer as a replacement either OEM or upgrade.

I have read lots of horror stories online about cheap ones snapping, vibration etc which obviously I want to avoid....

Looking for recommendations on your experience of a good brand to replace what looks to be faulty one on my car

Appreciate your help with this 🙂

That sounds like way too much power for the application.

You have three options:

1: Put a new Ford driveshaft on, then next week the clutch will go, the following week the other driveshaft, the week after that the gearbox

2: Put a new Ford driveshaft on and put the car back to standard or Stage 1

3: Buy a car that can handle 340 BHP

Hi Dave,

Thanks for you reply,

Totally agree and understand, I should have wrote that above, I have already taken the required precautions with the uprated gearbox, clutch, flywheel, suspension, brakes and all other components when i had the engine forged and the the car setup to a safe running of 340bhp.

I was just looking for honest user experience on driveshaft replacement and recommended brands that have been used and tested before.

Appreciate your comments and the time spent replying

Kind Regards

John

Unless there's a proven uprated version, you will be better off sticking with Ford

Could you not use RS versions?

I was thinking exactly that 🙂

I was looking for users experience on what they have used and tested rather than spending money on something that may or may not be suitable the standard ST ones that are on the car have been running 340bhp trouble free for years.

I only had the engine forged recently and built properly as one of the liners had a hairline crack so had the engine completely stripped down top to bottom, engine re sleaved and forged to future proof. At the same time i had an uprated RS oil cooler, clutch kit and flywheel. I've added a few pics of the engine rebuild below 🙂

I'm surprised Pumabuild haven't advised you on the best drive shafts

Hi Dave,

The car is due back there in a couple of weeks for its 1200 mile run in check/service. I will of course make them aware at point of booking and ask them to investigate the noise.

I'm pretty sure if the issue is the driveshaft Alan will advise to swap them out for RS ones, which is cool, i just wanted to test the water on this forum of anything other that's been tried and tested 🙂

My ST is also happy with that sort of power output though it doesn’t get used in anger very much tbh and not running forged internals like the OP. Do have RS clutch & flywheel plus oil cooler and few other bits though the gearbox hasn’t needed any upgrading as are fairly bulletproof already.

Loving those rebuild photos 😍

RS driveshafts won’t fit sadly - they’re longer due to the increased track the RS runs and also have different splines for fitting into the diff.

Pumabuild or other specialists should be able to advise of any suitable aftermarket alternatives or if your driveshafts can be rebuilt. I think Ford originally only made full shafts available but that changed after a while so rebuild kits may be an option.

Get all my major ST work done at Collins Performance, I’m glad to point anyone in their direction for ST work and they’re helpful with advice too 👍
