Price for work (turbo solenoid and timing belt)

Featured Replies

My mechanic has quoted £1300 to Replace turbo position control vacuum solenoid and Replace timing belt components on my 2014 Focus TDCI 1.6. Is that a fair price, it seems a lot!

Seems a lot to me too.

Cambelt & waterpump change should be around £500-£600 on this engine.

Boost solenoid is easy to replace yourself and only costs £30-£50 on eBay.

The price for solenoid replacement was £650... I found this video for ST solenoid replacement:

will that be the same for my 1.6 TDCI? If that's all I need to do I'll give it a go.

This should be the cost (around).

Garage quoted me £650 for timing belt (no problem with that) and £650 for boost solenoid (which seems ridiculous).

If I replace the boost solenoid myself does the car need to be on axel stands? Do i need to take a wheel off? I couldn't tell from the video how it was accessed.

That video is Mk2 2.5 petrol.  It won't be the same for a Mk3 1.6 TDCI.

The reason for the high garage quote will be the genuine replacement assembly, which includes all of the hoses as well as the boost solenoid.  The solenoid itself can be bought separately from aftermarket retailers or used on ebay.  Ideally need to check the part number on your solenoid first.

I wonder whether the chap who priced the job has quoted for the whole pump assembly rather than the solenoid! It's a big garage, so the mechanics pass the details to different team to send out the job quotes.

The pump isn't included with that pipework, that would be another £300 on top.

But yes, if they've asked Ford for a quote on the solenoid then it will include all the pipework and bracketry as shown above.  They may not want to use aftermarket or used parts.  The cambelt quote sounds perfectly acceptable so they're obviously not trying to rip you off on purpose.

I can't find that part new ... only seems to be second hand.

New ones are available aftermarket, but you need to check your part number matches for those.  Here's just one example:

I contacted ford parts online, and they said only that hose kit is available, i.e. not just the solenoid on its own.

Yes.  I have said that several times in this thread.

If you want the solenoid alone you need to buy from an aftermarket supplier.
