Specification for automatic transmision

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 2017 Focus 3.5 with 1.0 EcoBoost 125HP, automatic gearbox 6F15. I was trying to find in owner manual what is the specification for the oil in transmission, but here is nothing regarding this 😞

I've check, and everyone was mentioning here that with Mercon LV is the one that I have to go. I ask my local Ford dealer for an offer, and my surprise was that the offer is with Mercon ULV. I asked about it, and they told me that from 2018-19 on 6F15, Mercon ULV is the new standard.

If I let them to change the fluid with ULV, there will be any issues? Or should I insist to put LV instead?

Mercon LV in a MK3.5

Ecosport went to ULV at those dates, due to shift issues, but Fiesta stayed with LV

Use LV

DO NOT mix LV with ULV

You can use any fluid as long as it meets Mercon LV

You'll get about 3.5 to 4 litres out

Order 7 or 8 litres, drain and refill to 50% new, run for a week or so, then drain and refill again

There should be a white label under the airbox, on the bellhousing, telling you what fluid is inside

Mine was a 2017 6F15 and had LV

This says Mercon V and appears much cheaper than others (some at £14/l seems excessive?):

Check the exact spec with supplier if necessary.
I have used them for Powershift fluid and filter for the last 9 years (3 refills) and it has been fine.

Thank you for your reply DaveT!

Is there any written documented steps with all requirements how to do this by myself? I believe it was you or another owner who said that the transmission need to be at a certain temperature. Also there was some steps how to check if I put to much in it. On YT doesn't fell like all information is given, only if I try to combine the information from all vids that I can find XD

Vehicle, (well transmission) just needs to be warm.

Park on level ground and measure the height between the floor and the bottom of the front LH wing

Remove undertray

Drain fluid from bottom of trans, you'll get 3.5 to 4L out, but measure what comes out, , (I always start car and run D-R-D-P on idle, then switch off at this point, it gets about another 1/2L out, but it's not recommended and you must not run for longer than a minute, so don't do it if you're not confident),  replace drain plug (put some thread sealer on👍)

Remove breather tube (hook) from top of transmission and replace the exact amount of fluid that came out with new, you'll need a long funnel.

Remove LH front wheel and lower the vehicle down on the jack to the height of the car that you measured earlier

Start the car and keep your foot hard on the brake and run the transmission in neutral.

Then select D-N-R-N-D-R-D-P, repeat three times and then leave in P and leave engine running

Looking though the LH wheel arch, onto the transmission, you will see a large HEX head plug.

Remove that and let the excess fluid run out until a slight dribble or drip, if nothing comes out, add fluid at top until slight dribble or drip.

Replace HEX bolt

Refit Breather tube

Refit wheel

Refit undertray (check for leaks)

You will find the fluid that comes out is very dark/black.

Run for a week or 500 miles or so, then do the same again, this time adding two tubes of Lubeguard Shudder Fixx (you'll thank me later)

Hope this helps

I have checked with another service, this time not official FORD, but one that is highly appreciated near me, and they told me that based on my VIN, the recommended fluid for transmission is WSS-M2C949-A (Mercon ULV). I could be that starting with 2017 they started to use ULV and before 2017 it was LV?

I'm verry confused, and I don't know what to do and for which fluid should I go...

I have checked under airbox, and there are 2 white labels, but non of it tells me what type of fluid is in.

AFAIK MK3.5 Focus did not get ULV, only EcoSport with 6F15

BUT there should be a white label on the box (somewhere) telling you what's in it, there was on mine

Since last time we spoked, I had to do a major repair due to bad head gasket. While the engine was off, I had a look on transmission. There is no label indicating what fluid is in. Only labels with "Case" series, or "Housing" series, or SOL Body.

I saw some YouTube videos where I there was such yellow/white label near the planetary indicating the fluid type, operating temperature and tight force for the bolt, but nothing similar on mine.

Unfortunately, I was not able to find any evidence what fluid is right now. I check with other FORD dealers all of them told me that ULV should be used... Only one shop that is specialized on repairing all kind of automatic transmissions, said LV, the rest of them say ULV...

The only fear that I have is that I don't want to make a mistake and add and mix with the wrong one.

As I said, MK3.5 Focus did NOT get ULV only Ecosport

Use LV
