Looks like yours should be the tube type.

Ah - it’s on the opposite side to the condenser inlet/outlet. That’s the only bit of the system I can’t see! It looks integrated onto the condenser itself so not an easy replacement. I don’t want a whole new condenser. Presumably that tube doesn’t open to allow cleaning and refilling with desiccant?

Interesting question.  I doubt it can be opened or resealed effectively but don't know for sure.

Updating post with outcome in case someone follows in future.

Got second hand a/c compressor for £25 off eBay plus two new rubber seals for £10. BS211 HNBR70 (20.22 x 3.53mm) from Eastern Seals.

Went to garage and was told gas had all gone from system. This meant I could fit the compressor myself without worrying about any pressure/gas in system. Was fairly easy to reach compressor from under car. Just 3 long bolts and a mono block connecting the hoses. I removed a/c hose first to give more access to top bolt. Could see oil had leaked from back of old compressor. Put new stretch drive belt on while I was at it (6PK1029E for £15). Now regased (£60) and holding pressure and nice and cold.

Glad I persevered with it. Now just waiting for Summer so I can enjoy all the lovely cool air!

Did you have to put oil into the AC compressor or was it just a regas you needed to do?
