CCD damper leak, can ST CCD damper be used

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2019 Focus Saloon Titanium X 1.5 EcoBoost which has CCD damping, I think the system was for pot hole detection so the car has a Comfort drive mode.

My last MOT (42K miles) came up with an advisory for weeping NSR damper, the cost to replace with a new part is £1028 (one side) without labour. Part number JX6C-18W003-MJ. (i didn't realised the vehicle had CCD until I got it home a found the module sitting in the boot foam spacers, probably wouldn't have bought it if i'd been aware......my costly error:(

I've searched used part sites and nothing is available in UK. What is available are the ST CCD damper KX61-18W003-SF, also interesting is the new ST part is only £483.

Does anyone have any idea if I could swap out the original dampers for the ST variant? I've reviewed the phyisical dimensions and they're indentical apart from the bump stop lenght (can buy seperately) and minor angle tweek on the wiring brkt.

Thanks, I know it's a long shot but worth asking before  re-mortgaging :)

If it was just Misting rather than Weeping then there is nothing to worry about, just clean it off, it is not a fault.

Absolutely and definitely clean it before MOT

Standard dampers are much firmer on the ST than the Titanium.  Sports spec vs comfort spec.  I would expect that to be the case with CCD dampers as well.  I know the damping is variable, but I'm not sure it'll have the range to cover both comfort and sports specs?  It's so rare on the non-ST's that I doubt anyone else on here will have changed one yet.

Thanks for the replies. Read the MOT comment and it mentions misting, sorry I was wrong saying weeping.

Sounds like the Ford main dealer was looking to make some easy money, they wanted to change the damper right away. I'll clean both up before the next MOT and see what happens.

I may have to remove the CCD shocks and go standard, can't really afford £1000 each time a shock needs replacing. My only concern is any warning messages and lights that may come on, and if that leads to an MOT failure or cause ESP issues.

Other option is buy some used ST shocks and see what happens, not very technical but the only way to find out in ilo no techincal data.  I'll post again if it worked or failed.

MOT advisory

  • Nearside Rear Shock absorbers has light misting of oil (5.3.2 (b))

For info, Ford do not allow their Dealers to replace Dampers that have Light Misting under Warranty because they do not consider it to be a fault.

It is an MOT Advisory though.

Thanks for the info, I’ll leave it and check before the next MOT.
