Metal in fuel. Quoted 4k to replace system

Featured Replies

Long story short, my 2009 diesel Focus wasn't starting. Took it to a diesel mechanic and they have found metal shavings all through the fuel. Caused by a bad high pressure fuel pump.

So now need to replace high pressure pump, filter and one injector. Waiting to hear back about official quote to fix but will be around $3500-4000. Quoted $2800 for high pressure fuel pump. Does this seem right?

Issue is I have 4 years left on my loan, and the car is only worth 4500-5000 so in a bit of a pickle.

What would be my best option here?

Are you talking $=USD? That valuation for car sounds generous for a car of that age. You tried a breakers or ebay for a fuel pump? I would warn that if one injector goes you might lose others and they can be expensive.

No that's AUD so around 2500 USD for the fix.

Haven't tried looking at parts elsewhere, already been quoted 1000 just for the diagnosis

1 AuD currently worth around 50p if that helps anyone giving advice.

Here is the quote (AUD)

It seems excessive to me but I'm not a mechanic

I'd take a good second hand engine out of a scrappy first, that's clean, and fit that. Or even complete top end👍

Won't cost half that

Metal in fuel rail can't choose to only reach one injector.  They'll more than likely all be knackered now.

in the UK many as new cars around ULEZ areas are being scrapped.... because they can't be driven without a daily charge in large cities (heard its £27 a day in London, but that sounds like both ULEZ and congestion - as ULEZ is £12.5 a day)

so there will be lots of perfect spares available for almost nothing - get on ebay ?

not sure why DaveT70 is saying buy an engine... but the high pressure pump and injectors for sure

80 quid

Because they want 4K to get the metal out!!!!

Put an engine in without the metal in, that works would cost half of that🤔

Hi Dave

Sorry for being naive but why do I need the whole engine? Can't I just buy the pump, filter and maybe new injectors from the scrappy?

How much do you think it would cost if I provide the parts to a mechanic, and they drain tank out and install the new parts?

Thanks mate.

Are the pumps on the eBay link you provided definitely the right one for this model car? Thanks heaps for the suggestion. I'll shop around for a scrappy too

The HP pumps are different depending on which engine you have - 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 TDCI...and that's before considering the different Marks as well.  You need the part number(s) from your own pump to match.

The invoice shows the part number for the quoted pump as A2C59511600 which is a Siemens branded pump for the 2.0 TDCI engine.

Ok thanks.

I'm pretty sure mine is the 1.6 so not sure why they quoted the 2 litre? but I'll check when I tow the car back to make sure
