Ford Fiesta 64 gears

Featured Replies

After driving about 10miles  gears stick becomes extremely stiff sometimes I can’t move it  then all of a sudden it’s fine , it’s been to the garage but when they took it for a run it worked fine,   I did explain this to them   ,  it’s doing it more often now any advise of what it could be

Welcome to the forum.

Difficult to diagnose from here, but I'd take it to another garage you can trust.  No matter what they say, come back here first and tell us what they said, just in case they give you poor advice.

Mileage on the car? EDIT I see from your other post that the car has only done 27k miles, so it should be the original clutch...

Roughly where in the travel of the clutch pedal does the clutch 'bite'?  Right near the floor, or way up in the air?

For how long have you owned the car?

The car was a year old when I purchased it.   I can travel about 10 miles then  when I slow down  for lights etc try to put it gear it was stuck Wouldnt move  I turned the car off restarted then iit went into gear    on return Journey  did this three times

Sounds like a clutch problem, or someone has put Viagra in the gearbox oil 🤣

Clutch fluid level?

  • Author

I asked re the fluid they said it was fine !

I don't think it's been mentioned but what engine is in the car? Most Fiestas of that age share the same gearbox, but the 1.0 Ecoboost (particularly the more powerful versions) is known to sometimes cause issues with the box.

If you don't feel comfortable checking fluid levels on your car, is there a family member who can?

I repeat my advice - take it to a better garage who'll actually help you.  If your current garage is a Ford main dealer, I advise finding a small trusted mechanic - find local/friends' recommendations.

'Big' garages today just replace parts until the problem goes away - smaller old-skool garages (that are good) will find the car's actual problem.

If you really can't find anyone else to help, arrange to take the car to your current garage for a test-drive at a specific time - plan a ten-mile route to get there, which will have you at the garage with the greatest chance of reproducing the issue.

From hundreds of miles away, and from just a description, to me this suggests the clutch is not getting sufficient hydraulic fluid to operate - if it was a gearbox problem, it's likely that stopping and restarting the engine would make no difference.  But restarting the engine can give the clutch system a chance to re-pressurise.

You need to find a proper mechanic.  Good luck!
