Subframe corrosion advice please 🙏

Featured Replies

Evening all

hoping for some advice from members if possible please.

my old 63 plate fiesta just had MOT Friday.
Advisory is subframe corrosion and shock absorbers.

I’ve spent a lots of money in November having the front axel wish bones, front brakes and discs and tyres replaced. Wish the garages I took it to for repairs and quotes had informed me about the corrosion. Different garage done the MOT.

already had rear axels bushes replaced 2 years ago. Camshaft adjusted at ford aswell.

maintenance costs are spiralling.

needs shock absorbers and rear coil springs.

car is chrunching like bad noises bad suspension hitting small uneven tarmac, manholes and speed humps.
front left wheel over bumps first driving off centre over humps helps reduce the awful crunching.

2 garages say misting oil of rear passenger side shock absorber. But I feel like the front driver side has bad shock bounce and definitely feel the rear.

question is

Am I wasting money on shock absorbers and springs if the front and rear subframe is shot ?

do I get 2-3 garages inspection opinions and quotes for subframe etc ?

car drives ok always starts reliable car

61k miles on clock 63 plate 1.2 petrol duratec fiesta

any opinions and advice please

Firstly, any advisories are just that - you don't need to do anything this time but I would definitely suggest getting an estimate of how long before you do.
This car still sounds like it should have multiple years left although you do seem to have had a lot of repairs recently (sometimes it's just a phase and may then go a long time before the next set of repairs)

The cause of the crunching needs to be determined and total cost for all current repairs and anything needed service wise in the near future..

My personal thoughts are to bite the bullet and do the repairs unless you can see a massive amount needing to be spent on multiple serious issues occurring together.

This depends on how well the car has been maintained and assumes no problems with engine and gearbox (don't understand "camshaft adjustment" although timing belts are a critical maintenance task  - check when that is needed and the cost.

Also look at the total cost to change (thousands?) and use that to help your decision (good idea to get some estimates)

Note, we were offered £50 trade in (an insult - they didn't want it and said it would go to scrap!) for our  117k 2011 S-MAX against £24+k vehicles)which confirmed our decision to just keep it and take any repairs on the chin!

BUT, if you want another and can afford it nothing I say will be relevant.

Can't wait to see what others think!!!
