1998 Ford Fiesta Ghia key fob formatting?

Featured Replies

I've a 1998 Ford Fiesta Ghia and the key fob stopped working, won't unlock or lock car or silence alarm. The batteries were very new but I changed them for fresh ones before knowing about the key fob needing to be programmed to the car after a battery change. I've tried the method for programming the key from my haynes manual and another techniques from a forum on here but nothing seems to work.

these are the techniques from here;

1)

-Switch ignition ON 4 times in 3 seconds.

-Switch ignition OFF. and remove key

-Programing mode activated for 20 second (LED illuminated). Proceed as follows

-Press unlock or lock button

-Ensure clock LED flashes ( indicates correct programing )

-Wait 2 seconds

-Repeat above if you have more key.

to exit programing mode: Switch ignition ON and wait 20 seconds.

turn ignition OFF remove key and try the remote...

2)

-turn ignition switch to position 1.

-wait approximately 10 seconds

-ensure clock LED illuminates.

NOTE: LED illuminates for approximately 5 seconds.

-switch ignition OFF and remove key, while LED illuminated.

-programming mode activated for approximately 20 seconds(LED illuminated)Proceed as fallows:

-point key at receiver(located near interior lamp)

-press and hold unlock button. after approximately 1 second key LED will flash once

-press lock button 3-5 times

-release unlock button

-continue to point key at receiver until LEDs in clock and key have flashed 5 times

-to exit programing mode and extinguish clock LED:

-switch ignition ON and OFF

-wait approximately 20 seconds.

This if your remote have infra as well.

The haynes manual says to put the key into the ignition to position 1 and the LED light in the clock should illuminate for 30 seconds which means you can reprogramme the key by holding down the front button on the key until the light on the key flashes then press the rear button  3 times and the clock LED and key light should flash simultaneously.

The clock LED is either constantly on for a while after starting the ignition (which sets the alarm off) or is always flashing intermittantly and nothing I do seems to affect the led in any other way.

Every time I try to have a go at sorting this I keep setting the alarm off and don't want to keep annoying the neighbours so any help with this would be appreciated before I admit defeat and call in a mechanic.

Key in the ignition.

Position - 1 is aux. only (radio)

Position - 2 is ignition on

Position - 3 is start.

Are you turning the key only to position 1 ?

Replacing the keyfob battery should not cause the car to loose connection with the key.

Have you used a multimeter to check that the new batteries are good ?

Changing the battery does NOT require the fob to be reprogrammed.

The Remote receiver is probably faulty, normally corroded connections, but I'm not sure where it is on a MK4.

It's probably on the roof above the rear view mirror though.

Clean the connections and see if it woks.

Though, if you've tried to reprogram, you've probably lost it now
