Ford Focus Crank No Start - Another Clue?

Featured Replies

I purchased a 2013 Ford Focus 1.0 Mk3 in December, but shortly after, I started experiencing issues.

First Incident

Two days after buying the car, following a long drive, it wouldn’t start.

  1. Attempt 1: Tried to start – no crank, sounded like a dead battery (or maybe a short).
  2. Attempt 2: Tried again – still no crank.
  3. Attempt 3: This time it cranked but wouldn’t start.

This “crank-no start” issue persisted for a week. An RAC patrol inspected the car and suggested replacing the crankshaft position sensor (CKP). I replaced it, but the problem didn’t go away. Frustrated, I left the car parked for two weeks.

When I returned, the car started immediately without any problems.

Second Incident

The car ran fine for the next two weeks. I turned it on and off around 50 times and drove it on a few short trips (5–10 minutes each). Everything seemed normal, so I decided to take it on another long trip.

After driving for 200 miles, I parked the car for a few hours. When I came back, the same no-start problem occurred:

  1. Attempt 1: No crank.
  2. Attempt 2: No crank.
  3. Attempt 3: Cranking, but no start.

I had started to suspect the HPFP, because occasionally when the car does start, it misfires for a few seconds and the check engine light flashes.

However, I recently read a post about leaking coolant which got me thinking about my experience:

1. When I changed the CKP, I noticed there was dried coolant on the alternator.
2. During my long drive, I had no heating, even though I was recirculating the air.
3. My coolant level has dropped from 'high' to below 'low' in the 300~ miles that I've had the car.

Thanks for taking the time to read, I'd be grateful for any advice you can offer.

you need to check basics - battery connections, starter connections, plus earths, fused links all tight etc....

but more importantly these engines die - coolant loss you have sounds like it has....
