mk3 1.6T wet or dry belt

Featured Replies

Hi All,

The time is nearly here where I need to purchase a new car as my existing one is coming to the end of its life and will probably need to be scrapped soon. I need something practical as it wil mainly be used for school and short distance trips out. I really love the Ford Focus, particularly the mk3 focus. I would also like something with a bit of zip to it, so I have been looking at a 2012/13 mk3 1.6T Zetec S. My question is, do these engines have the dreaded wet belt or are they dry or chain? I've ran a search online, and I'm getting conflicting information. My search says they are wet, yet ive read on forums of people who own them that they are dry.

I would be most grateful if someone could clarify this for me.

Cheers

Dry belt on the 4 cylinder 1.6 turbo. The 1.0 3 cylinder ecoboost is the one with the wet belt.

Confusion arises because Ford used "Ecoboost" as a generic term for all turbocharged petrol engines.

Thanks mate, ***** google search, it lies ☺️. I did think as much. A friend of mine has recently bought a 1.0 ecoboost. I did tell them about the wet belt issue, so I just told them they need to change the oil regularly and use the right oil. I could do without that worry though. Thanks again

NB The belt on the 1.6 turbo has a recommended change interval of 125k miles/10 years iirc, so if looking at a 2012/3 you will need to check this has been done.
