Change of ownership

Featured Replies

Been a long time since I posted.

Recently I have been diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer and cancer in the liver.I've been through chemo/radiotherapy and now started immunotherapy, prognosis not looking too good.

I've been getting my affairs in order to make things easier for my wife.

Sorted Car insurance so that now she is the main drive and gets my NCB, just registered keeper to change in her name. As you know registered keeper is not registered owner. I still have receipts from when I bought the car brand new. Is there something I can do to make sure she has proof of ownership?

I am sorry to read that.

Although legally the V5 doesn't prove ownership, I wouldn't expect it to be challenged in reality.  If you really wanted to make sure then you could sell the car to your wife for a for a token amount of £1, providing a bank transfer and a receipt to prove the change of ownership.

I've had to put my affairs in order for a similar reason. My partner died of cancer two years ago and I'm a stage 4 metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer patient with an uncertain prognosis.

In general your estate, including the car, can pass to your wife free of inheritance tax, so you don't need to do anything for her to prove ownership though formally it won't be hers until probate is granted. You have made a will haven't you? Make sure it's up to date and that you are happy with those you have named as executors. A lawyer that can draw up a will should have a working knowledge of inheritance tax, however I would advice at least having a meeting with a tax lawyer to ensure you understand what will happen to your estate, particularly if you it will be liable to tax on potentially exempt transfers of goods or property i.e recent gifts.
