Yes that sounds like the alternator though they don't generally fail so soon.

Has the car done high mileage?

Is the alternator belt still intact?

Was it fitted with the correct battery?

You can try unplugging the small plug on the alternator, to see if it goes into default mode and provides about 13v of charge.  If it does then it's more likely a wiring fault.

cars done just under 90000 (driving instructor) i checked belt looks fine .battery is one for the car . im going to take battery off tonight to charge overnight .il try unplugging alternator plug will it be obvious if its not the alternator at fault ?

Ah ok, with that mileage I'd be less surprised by an alternator fault.

If the alternator starts charging with the small plug disconnected then it's not likely to be the alternator at fault.
