Car break in

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ford focus 2020 owner, I had a break in in my car overnight!.. There was nothing to steal and the car seems fine so it’s okayish… two things I wanted to ask:

- since there’s nothing broken I believe I might have left the car with the doors unlocked.. or is there a trick to get in a ford focus that is well known?..

- the doors unlocked automatically when you’re close and put your hand in the door handle. Is there a way to have the car lock the doors when we leave the car unattended for a few minutes and are far enough for the car to not detect the keys? Through FORScan maybe?

Thanks for any help!

Your car has keyless entry.  Thieves can use a 'relay device' to pick up the signal from the keyfob inside your house and boost that signal across to unlock your car.

You can turn off the keyless entry in the car, or use a faraday pouch to block the keyfob signal when you're at home.

The Mk4 Focus doesn't have a 'walk-away locking' function, unlike many other cars.

2020 focus has sleepy keys so relay devices wouldn’t work unless it was within about 30s of the keys being put down.

I didn't think the Focus got them until late 2020?

Also possible this car could have been built in 2019.

My 2019 build has them. Afaik all mk4 have them. It was the Fiesta that didn’t start till 2019 iirc.

Ah, that could be where the confusion comes from then.

Early MK4  didn’t get sleepy keys. I have a March 19 plate and a friend has a 68 plate without them.

Don’t forget to keep your spare key in a faraday pouch too.

Pouch,s available in Aldi this week at £3:99 for a pair.

I think they can be added though.

A 2020 that the OP has will definitely have them and for reassurance it’s easy enough to test it.

Seems like turning off the keyless entry in the car is the best option for me.. I still automatically open the door with the keyfob anyway.. Is it through FORscan?

Also, How can I see on my keys if they have the sleep function? the car was built in 2020.

Cheers

Lock car, put keys on floor next to car.

Wait about 60s then without moving/touching the keys, try the door handle.

Mine was built August 2019 and has sleepy keys, so yours should have them.

You do it through the Instrument Cluster Settings.

Switching Keyless Entry On or Off
  1. Using the information display controls on the steering wheel, select Settings.
  1. Select Vehicle Settings.
  1. Select Locks.
  1. Select Intelligent Access.
