Gearbox/clutch issue

Featured Replies

Hi all, hope someone can help with a problem I'm finding honestly baffling! Car is a 2004 Fiesta mk6 1.4 petrol, on 60k miles. Was going round a roundabout last night when there was a bang as I changed down (from 3rd to 2nd) and I lost all drive. Coasted to kerb and parked up. Engine didn't stall or anything, and the gears seem to select fine but just nothing engages when I let the clutch out. Clutch itself feels normal, and the common problem of the clutch/master cylinder rod has been addressed in the past and it's still all attached.

Could the gearbox itself be kaput? As I say, car has only done 60k so this seems unlikely. I can put it in any gear and get no resistance at all when I roll the car... which makes me think the clutch plate itself must have, I dunno, exploded? Would be very grateful for any input/insights on this!

Happened to my focus too, the reason was that the gear selector stick fell off the gearbox. The bushing was old and failed. You could pop off the cover from the box and check. I have an ib5 transmission, guessing you have the same

You could have a broken driveshaft/CV joint.

Thanks for both those replies. I'll get to investigation middle of the week, and report back on condition of CV joints and gear linkage

Ok so gearshift linkages seem OK. One of them is a bit floppy on its connection, looks like bush is worn - but it still selects gears. Clutch seems normal, with progressive action, and pedal returns OK. Driveshafts also seem fine... So still baffled. I wonder if input shaft has snapped? Looks like box is going to have to come out

Probably the clutch failed or release mechanism
