Thinking of buying the above

Pros and cons please

Do these have wet belts

Cheers

The main cam/crank timing is done by a chain.  But they also have a small wetbelt for the oil pump.

Is this a good or bad thing?

Well, it is still a wetbelt.  It is still recommended to be replaced at 10 years old.  And it is fitted behind the chain, so the replacement job will cost at least as much as the old engine timing belt change, plus inflation.  None of the Puma's are old enough to have needed that service procedure yet.

However, on the plus side, it's much smaller than the timing belt, so physically less debris available to cause the oilpump clogging issues if it degrades.  And as long as the engine is switched off immediately if the oil light comes on, then there's a chance the engine won't be catastrophically damaged by that, unlike with timing belt failure.

Ultimately it's your decision.  I don't think any modern car/engine/transmission setup is totally reliable nowadays.

Any alternatives in mind?

A few people have gone for the Puma ST instead of the Fiesta ST, in which case the cam chain/oil pump belt situation is the same for both.

I would say in general the Puma is not quite as good a drive as a Fiesta, pros being a bit more space, especially boot, and not having suffered the loss of equipment the later Fiestas did. Same seats but slightly higher position in the Puma.

The 1.5 ST Puma is now unavailable new of course,  170ps 1.0 DCT only now.

Personally I'd go for it, when I bought my 155bhp ST LINE X in 2022 I wanted a proper ST, but couldn't afford one.

What I know now about the 2nd gear issue with the 1.0 litre 155 I wouldn't have bothered. That said I'm not worried about the small wet belt for the oil pump as I religiously change the oil every 10,000 miles no matter what, and "they" say as long as the oil is changed regularly the wet belt isn't an issue.

It's your decision but I would still, today 100% buy a full fat ST.
