Gear lever to much play

Focus 2010 Man 1.6 Titanium.
My gear stick selects the gears ok, but there is to much play on the lever. For instance, selecting any gear, I can rotate the gear lever in a circle of a diameter of 2 inches.it feels loose. It selects all the gears and the drive is ok. I have had a new clutch fitted, but the garage refuses to look at it unless I book it in and leave the car for a half a day. Is there anything I can check in the meantime?

    Has this only happened since the clutch change?

    You can check the gear cable bushes.  They are inside a plastic box on the front of the gearbox.
