Fiesta 2006 1.4tdci wont rev

Featured Replies

hi I'm having a problem with my fiesta 1.4tdci. On way home from work I lost power, car wouldn't rev properly foot flat to floor and struggled to rev. I just got it home left overnight . Next day went to start it and it wouldn't start. Battery died. After jump starting it I adventually got it started it will tick over but will not rev properly. I've now changed fuel filter  and fuel priming lines/bulb. I've done a diagnostics test and showing no codes. Would a faulty injector stop it reving properly. Any advice would be helpful as I need car for work and I'm running out of ideas old car don't want to spend a fortune trying to fix things that aren't broke.

Is the turbo working?

Its spinning.

I had this on a Renault Scenic diesel, had to get towed to the main dealer, 'cos AA couldn't fix it. Turned out the egr needed cleaning.

Wouldn't egr throw up an engine light and code?

Early 1.4 TDCI uses a vac operated EGR.  Also has no MAF.  So the ECU doesn't know whether it works or not.

If you've got the electronic EGR then I would expect a fault code if it's stuck.

Yes its eletric egr. I've had it changed before due to a light showing.  I. More thinking along the lines fuel pump, or injectors but want to be sure before paying out for repairs.

Once i get it started my foot can be flat to floor and no rev increase.

Sounds more like a faulty throttle pedal tbh.

Has the battery been replaced now?  Low voltage causes all sort of electronic faults.

A faulty injector is more likely to throw a fault code like a knock sensor fault. Also fuel pump will result in low fuel rail pressure, also resulting in a fault code and eml. So don't throw parts at it - that's a sure fire way to run out of money. What are you using to read for fault codes?

Just had another thought..... Just check that all the boost pipes are securely in place and that one hasn't popped off. I had something similar happen on my mk3 Mondeo, and it was a pipe had popped off the intercooler. Simple as that, and no fault codes either.

Icarsoft pro diagnostic reader.  No intercooler on 1.4tdci no boost pipes! Throttle pedal gives a steady  voltage rise as pressed on the diagnostic live read. So don't think its that.

OK, then, if boost pipes don't exist, then try cleaning the egr. I know it'll throw a fault,  but also try a blanking plate temporarily, but don't use a coke can as its too thin, even temporarily as it'll just blow through.

that only happens with a baked beans can 🤣

I was forgetting Blazing Saddles!

There are boost pipes.  It could be a cracked resonator from the turbo.  It could be a split in the boost pipe from resonator to inlet.  It could have blown the air temp sensor out if fitted.  The remote MAP sensor pipe could have split if fitted.

Would recommend trying Forscan as iCarsoft may not be showing Ford specific codes.

OK thank you a few things to look at. I've been told to look at air in fuel lines. Would that possible stop it reving. I've changed the priming pump and tubes and the fuel filter. Only pipes left are the return and supply from tank. If not these where else could it be drawing in air from.

Hi, why not try some of the ideas we've already suggested above.

My money is still on egr or boost pipes to inspect,  Forscan will reveal Ford specific codes that your reader might not touch.

Air in the fuel lines would make it very difficult to start.  Once it is started, generally it'll rev ok at normal speeds but should drop into limp mode if the fuel pressure drops, usually noticed when trying to overtake or accelerate uphill.  Low fuel pressure will trigger a fault code on the ECU, and that should be a basic OBD code that even the iCarsoft should pick up.

I have been trying the things suggested and still no luck hence why I keep thinking of different things it could be.

Hi ok , I've had a couple weeks off , illness and work. But back trying to sort this fiesta.

I've bought a forscan tool ,as suggested mine wasn't good enough and might be missing codes.. but its still the same no codes showing.  The car will now start and tick over a bit sluggish first but then after 4 5 minutes it's idling like normal. But the problem is when you try to rev it. I've replaced fuel lines checked boost hoses for splits and cleaned and checked egr valve. I've got live date if that would help anyone with diagnostics and can do live data reading if someone needs to know any readings to help.

OK UPDATE!! after removing egr valve  again to clean it. Noticed it had a rattle inside as I've turned it upside down a small black circle fell out. The bottom of the valve has come off. I've now blocked the valve off and replaced egr with an old one I had in garage. Started car its back to normal revs are responsive no smoke.

Out on a test drive its now jumped into limp mode! Showing code p0002.  Cleared code went again it was OK. Stopped at shop started again drove and limp mode same code. Removed code then drove home with no code coming on.

P0002 any ideas could ot be just air in fuel. Or maybe disturbed wire. I'm thinking this is the sensor on the fuel pump.? I'm almost there the car will live again!

I'd start by doing a leakoff test on the injectors. How old is the fuel filter anyway?
