turbo vanes jamming against housing

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have a 2008 Transit T350 that had the diesel motor and turbo replaced 19,000 km ago.

Recently we had to have the turbo replaced as the actuator was only able to run to 70% of available travel and the diagnosis was "stuck vanes".

There were no other issues other than the engine light staying on and multiple turbo faults picked up on a scan tool.

On further investigation, it was found that the vanes were jamming against the housing evidenced by marks on the housing when the turbo was  pulled apart.

I have attached a pic of the marks. There was very little carbon deposits and what was evident was considered to be very normal.

Wondering if anyone has seen this before and could provide a more in-depth diagnosis other than the assumtion that this is caused by excess heat and the vanes "swell" with the heat and breach the available side tolerance. I am not that enamoured to funding $3000NZ to replace the turbo every 19,000 km.

Any advice appreciated.
