Turbo oil starvation

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m currently working on a 1.6L 2008 tdci ford focus because the turbo cartridge snapped due to oil starvation. I start it up with no turbo on and there is oil coming from the oil feed pipe but only a small amount in low pressure. Could this problem be a blocked pipe. I have already done an oil and filter change. Thank you 👍

Very possible IMHO, ALL pipework both supply and drain MUST be totally clear and clean.

Worth fitting new if any doubt as turbo oil flow and drain is crucial. There is often a small mesh filter somewhere in feed pipe to renew or ensure it is totally clean?

I believe that early examples of that Engine did have the Mesh Filter but Ford did not fit it to later versions because it kept blocking and starving the Turbo.

There was a Technical Service Bulletin for Turbo failure that explained how to measure the Oil Flow and to renew to Oil Feed Pipe. I don't have a copy of it now.

I might get a new feed pipe but just remove the mesh filter, dirty oil better than none it has had a fresh oil change though. How hard of a job is it to do the feed pipe if you have done it before, I believe I will have to remove the dpf. Thank you

That is sensible and just like later Engines.

I haven't done the job myself so I'm not sure.

I think one of the recommendations when replacing the turbo on these is to remove sump clean or replace oil pick up strainer also to replace injector seals as leaking injector seals cause carbon build up in the oil and remove the strainer in the feed pipe.
