How to stop water in engine, MK2 Focus LX 1.6l Petrol

Featured Replies

So I've had a couple of call outs to AA in last few months who advised that water was getting into the engine and getting spark plugs wet, causing misfires, and corroding my ignition leads.

Spoken to Ford and the car wasn't supplied with an engine cover from the factory when new so they can't supply one now.

How do I stop water from getting to my spark plugs? Multiple garages have told me the car is known for water in the engine.

I don't have a coolant leak so it's not that. That's been checked, core plugs, spark plugs, and water pump all changed.

Buy the Volvo cover if not Ti-VCT model.

Any engine cover of any manufacturer's 1.6 Sigma engine will fit, you will need the mounting pegs off the donor engine too.

So if Ford never fitted one, Mazda and Volvo probably did. (JLR never used that engine)

But, Fiesta may have had one or Fusion

The only other option is to make your own, cable tie a large piece of plastic over the top of the rocker cover that is angled towards the exhaust manifold so that it roll off and evaporates when you drive.

Or, find out where the water is coming from, that sits on the top of the engine, and seal that path

I used to get pools of water around the spark plugs, it gets in around the windscreen washer jets. Seal them with silicone sealer under the bonnet.

Thank you all very much! Glad to know there's some fixes and it's not just me!

i'll second this

take the lid of a 2.5 kg walls ice cream tub - in the top right corner keeping it all round 15mm from the corner - cut a hole matching the shape of the engine oil filler, then make a small hole in the opposite corner for a cable tie

place upside down (smooth side up) over the two spark plugs nearest the drive belt and locate with oil filler cap and the cable tie

can be done now and costs nothing - taking 3 mins - her's has been like that for 8 years (same lid - still flexible) 100% directs water ingression via the right bonnet mounted screen washer jet - and drains it where the MORONS at ford should have made the car correctly the first time

wasting your life ruining the heated washer jets and getting more silicon around the neighbourhood, than the pathetic amount you can't get where you want due to the wiring - never seals the jets, looks hideous, is messy, expensive and utterly pointless

That sounds like an excellent idea.  Though it does assume we all have ice cream tubs lying around...don't think I've even seen one in 10 years!

Think I may well try this!
