Oil warning light

Featured Replies

Should my fiesta st line mild hybrid have oil pressure warning light 2022 model  dealer says it doesn't have one ,so what happens if pressure drops apart from seizing up of course?

Sounds like dealer BS.

They don't have an oil level light but do have oil pressure.  Note that it doesn't show during stop/start to prevent customers worrying about it.

According to the 2022 Fiesta owners handbook there is. Mind you, the books are often out of date.

Thanks for that but I don't want to go back to dealers with all guns blazing unless I am really sure with you saying the books can be out of date, so no wiser really.

The dealer could be right. My 2023 is not an MHEV of course, but no little red oil can is visible with ignition on and engine off, so there is nothing to go off when started. (Pics below ignition on but engine not running.) Hopefully it would show in the event of a pressure problem!

I've just checked a few MHEV engines on eBay, they've all got oil pressure switches fitted on the front.  Might be awkward to access around the generator but if you can unplug it then the light should come on.  They may just mean it no longer comes on with ignition, for the same reason the it doesn't come on with SS.

What happens if you put the instrument cluster in to engineering test mode ?

  • Ignition off. Press and hold the 'OK' button on the steering wheel
  • While holding the OK button in, turn the ignition on (don't start the engine)
  • Wait about 5 seconds and instrument cluster should enter engineering mode
  • Release the 'OK' button and use the menu to select which test you would like to perform
  • Turn off the ignition to cancel engineering mode

Thank you for your time and information I will try that will be tomorrow now thanks.

Now that's interesting. I assumed you meant for Chris to do it but just had a go in mine out of curiosity - not tried it on this car.

Zilch. That was the procedure on my previous Mk 8 with analogue instruments, the digital must be different.

Perhaps that's also the explanation for no oil can showing - I believe the ST-Line Vignale had the digital instruments?

Yes mine is st line vignale with digital dash, will try engineering mode tomorrow and see what happens.

Just for interest, an image of Mk 8 ST analogue instruments - ignition on. No oil can there, either. So looks as if it was dropped from the Mk 8.

The "car alarmed" flashing led was also dropped when the Mk 8 came out.

Edit: Funnily enoughI had a Mk 8 with analogue dash for 5 years and never noticed whether it had an oil can or not! I guess your eye/brain is just trained to note that all lights in your peripheral vision go out on start up. Presumably the "check engine" lamp covers all bases now.

Our 22 plate MHEV Vignale definitely has an oil can light, near the battery light and EML

I found this YouTube video of the Mk8 with analogue clocks. It seems that with the engine off the oil light is only shown for about 2 seconds. See the attached photo taken from the video.

As that's a video of the test mode I guess you would expect to see the oil warning light somewhere in the sequence?

Been out and about this morning and started the car several times. Kept a very careful eye on the instrument screen (without blinking in case I missed anything!) Doing my normal starting procedure (depress the clutch and hit the button), screen goes from completely blank to normal running display with no symbols other than handbrake on.

Also tried it just with ignition on but engine not running (by pressing the button but not depressing the clutch), screen is as shown in my earlier post, no oil can.

So, intriguing. We do know that Ford fitted the wrong analogue clocks (ST Line rather than ST) to some of the last STs, but can't see that they would have had digital clusters with/without oil lights. (Though you never know with Ford!)

We have to assume that they will illuminate in an actual low oil pressure situstion!.

Thanks for checking that out Roger. So the Oil pressure light remains a mystery 🤔

Will it or won't it. Perhaps Ford have realised it was a pointless warning, by the time it came on the engine was already scrap 🤣

Just out of interest, this topic has been picked up on another forum.

No-one had the oil can showing on the digital dash with ignition on/engine off there either. So it does appear, amazing as it seems, that the dealer may have been correct in this instance.
