Ecoboost gearbox woes !

Featured Replies

Sons Fiesta has been making some weird noises  whilst attempting to access second gear , either up from first or down from third. As i seem to have inherited his car as he is working away it seems only right that i should attempt to repair it at my expense , obviously.

So , gearbox now out and in bits waiting for a new second gear and synchro's for 1st + 2nd.

To the question(s).

How the feck do you put oil in the box as there is no filler plug - is it filled through the reversing switch , and if so how much does the Getrag GX65 box take ??

Any definitive way to bleed the clutch as i will be fitting a new clutch kit and slave cylinder ?

TIA - Kenny

Being an ECOboost the car would have the 6-speed version (6MX65) of the Ford/Getrag MX65 transmission?

There is a level plug at the front of the 6MX65 transmission.

Ford prescibes to fill the transmission oil through the level plug until the correct level is obtained.

The workshop manual shows how to make a tool to check the oil level.

A pressure bleeder is required to bleed the clutch properly.

After the clutch system is bled using the pressure bleeder the clutch pedal must be operated 5-times. Now start the engine and operate the clutch for another 5-times. Wait 30 seconds and check the functionality of the clutch. If selecting reverse gear is noisy repeat the bleeding procedure.

Failure of the 1st and 2nd gear synchronizers is unfortunately quite common on the 6MX65 transmission . Especially on heavier vehicles like for example the Focus MK4/MK4.5.

The modular design MX65 transmission family (5-speed 5MX65 and 6-speed 6MX65) was designed as a low cost successor of the old 5-speed IB5 transmission. The Ford 6MX65 transmission is also known as the Getrag 6MTT215 where 215 stands for the maximum allowed torque that the transmission can handle.

That`s great , thanks for taking the time + effort to post the info .

Cheers - Kenny

That is indeed a fabulous answer, especially from someone who doesn't own a Fiesta?

Is there an award for Post of the Month?  JW deserves one 🙂

Gearbox now rebuilt with new 1st + 2nd synchro rings along with a new second gear , total was £504 which included the rings / gear / driveshaft oil seals / gearbox oil / top bearing / clutch kit with new slave , all of which were from the main dealer.

Only "extras" were the sealant and a pair of the fancy pliers that fit the snap rings on the gearbox shafts and a packet of After Eight mints for my labour.

Next thing is sorting out the cause of the yellow spanner being displayed on the cluster , but that will be on a different thread.

Hi,

First of all, great thread and very helpful. I'm experiencing a very similuar issue with my 2021 1.0 155 hp Fiesta St-Line and thinking of tackling it myself. However, the car is only 50 000 miles and not abused and especially careful with gear changes.

Do you guys know of any strengthening kits or upgrades to make this gearbox more realiable. If not I might just repair it and then sell the car.

Thank you,

João Picão

It seems the issue is made worse on MHEV cars and led Ford to drop the manual option on the 155 Puma and Focus, the Fiesta having already been discontinued altogether.

Several threads on here on the issue, such as:

I don't think we've seen mention of any strengthening kits, one member fitted the Mk 3 Focus 6 speed box to the earlier version of the Fiesta Ecoboost:
