Removal of oil filter housing

Featured Replies

Good afternoon all,

(focus mk2 1.8 tdci)

I recently discovered water in the engine oil.

ran a hydrocarbon test and the result seemed positive - fluid stayed red.

So i decided to remove the oil cooler and have a look at it.

The oil cooler itself seemed impossible to remove independently due to the location on top of the oil filter housing.

So I decided it would be easier to remove the whole oil filter housing containing the oil cooler. (Particularly as the problem could be related to the oil filter housing and not just the oil cooler)

After struggling to removed one of the 2 coolant pipes from the oil cooler I successfully removed the oil pipe and the 4 bolts connecting the oil filter housing to the engine block only to realise the whole unit is attached to the pulley belt system (What exactly is this please?)

Now i’m unsure how best to proceed. I thought about removing a bolt which looks like it may release the oil filter housing without disturbing the belts (picture attached) but I don’t know if i’ll be digging a hole that will cause further problems.

Any help on how to proceed would be great?

That's a bit of a bodge by Ford.  This engine was designed to have a hydraulic power steering pump at the top rear location.

The Mk2 Focus has semi electric steering so no belt driven pump.  But without the pump in place, the belt won't run tightly around the waterpump pulley in the middle.

So they had to add an idler at the top in place of the PAS pump pulley, and keep the tensioner below.

You can remove that block,  but you do need to remove the belt first.  I'm not sure that's necessary to remove the oil cooler but haven't done one myself.

Thanks for the feedback Tom.

What exactly is that belt?

It's the auxiliary belt.  Runs the alternator, AC compressor and waterpump on your engine.  It's not toothed or timed so pulleys don't need to be locked before removal.

The top tensioner is sprung.  Use a socket and suitable bit (looks like Torx type) to rotate it down and away from the belt in order to slip the belt off.  Then again to slip the belt back on and it'll tension automatically using the spring pressure.  Here's a better picture of the setup from above.

I'd be interested to know how you posted the image Tom. This is what my browser shows (Firefox). If I hover over the blank space it pops up the Enlarge image message and if I click on it it opens a totally blank black page. A second click returns back to the original.

That's very strange.  I simply copied and pasted it from an ebay advert.  This is the same method I've been using for a while so I hope that's not been happening all the time!

That works fine. Must have been a one-off.

Thanks for divulging Tom.

That top tensioner you refer to, is it the one i’ve circled in red below?
