2010 Focus - Missing under dash parts?

Featured Replies

Hi all, new guy here. Just picked up a Focus mk2 2.0 Titanium as a runaround, I work from home so don't drive a lot nowadays but still need something for shopping, day out with kids and the occasional airport run. This car had part service history, and very low 53k mileage, confirmed by MOT history which is also very clean, and seller had receipts for advisories resolved historically, so seemed suitable (already got a list of gripes about it however after only 100 miles of driving, but that's another story!).

Not owned or even been passenger in a Focus previously, but it seems that there should be some kind of panel on the underside of the dashboard on both sides, i.e. above the front occupants feet. I can see yellow trim clips on the passenger side suggesting that there was once something there. Drivers side has nothing, looking under there I can see the steering column (which is how I discovered lack of covers, steering shaft rubbing against my clutch foot!). However, try as I might I have been unable to locate any such things for sale on ebay, no images in any context via a google search, so I have no idea what form these missing pieces would have taken... I'm starting to question whether they even existed or not as I can find no reference to them at all. Were they carpet? Solid plastic? High density foam?

Seen other threads on here saying that the passengers ones sag, get removed to access fuses, get ripped off etc, but I would REALLY like to try and replace them (may solve another of my annoyances with this car already!). Don't know what I'm looking for though. Were they carpet? Solid plastic? High density foam? Would any kind soul be able to upload a pic or two of theirs when they get a chance? Many thanks in advance!

There’s a fibre panel that fits over the passenger side fuse box and held in place with 2 plastic fixings that push into studs on the fuse box or its mounting brackets (can’t remember which)

Called a dash panel insulator, Ford FINIS number 1451253 for RHD cars I reckon

Looks like this

Dont think there’s anything on the drivers side.

think this is what you have missing ..

I bet the OP can live with out it now they know it's £45 😂

I don't recall driver's side ever getting one

That’s the reason I decided against posting the same eBay link 😉

Thanks for rapid responses, much appreciated!

The engine noise is very loud in this car, and it's most noticeably coming from the lower passenger area. Was hoping that the missing piece might be a more substantial thicker foam backed sound deadening panel or something of that nature, which I would gladly have dropped £45 on if it quietened things down. Looking at that, can't imagine it making much of a difference. At least now I know what I'm looking for I can try a few scrappies, so many thanks for that 🙂

As for the drivers side, I'd be surprised if there was not a cover meant for there, as there are several mounting holes underneath the dash for such a panel to clip onto and I've had (and still have) older cars in which all of the mechanical and wiring under there have been covered. Maybe I've just got big feet, but unless I press the clutch down with my tiptoes, shoe rests against the steering shaft joint and I feel it turning as I steer!

Further to above then... So does no-one here have any of these covers on their car?

From what I can gather, just the passenger should have one, but your BCM had probably been out that many times they've lost it

During production of the MK2.5 the cloth insulator below the GEM module/fuse box was discontinued because of Ford cutting costs. It is completely normal for a 2010 MK2.5 to not have the cloth insulator.

The cloth insulator was only installed at the passenger side. The driver side did never have such thing.

The cloth insulator does not dampen sound in any way. It is just for cosmetic purposes. Compared to todays standards and expectations the Focus MK2.5 is noisy. The MK2 has even thinner sound insulation which makes it even noisier than the MK2.5.

Thanks for the info, good to know and I'll abandon the search. Odd that they fitted the yellow clips to hold the cover in place, but not the cover though!

Heh, funny you mention that... This is the most modern car I've ever owned, hence I have no experience of todays standards, nor expectations as a result! The car it's replacing which I've had for the last 7 years was made 2002, the 'youngest' car I've ever owned until now!
Road noise not too bad, it's just the engine drone is so intrusive! Oh well, I guess I'll get used to it in time...

Many thanks all for your replies, very much appreciated. I'll stop flogging this dead non-insulated horse now 😄

Nothing to see here, move along...

Pssst, what's the etiquette on this particular forum, only got here yesterday. Do I close the thread or just let it die naturally?

Could be that the panel was fitted to your car originally and it’s gotten lost since then, or the run out of parts from different sources didn’t match up exactly so some cars continued getting the mounting pins for the cover fixings after the cover itself was deleted.

As far as I know the pins are always fitted.

It is the cloth cover and the clips that clip onto the pins that were no longer fitted due to cutting costs.

Some cars also had this flexible plastic cover fitted. This clips onto the plastic casing of the GEM unit. It prevents the plugs being knocked by a passenger's feet.

My 2005 built LX had neither this or the fibre cover when I got it. I bought both from a breakers very cheaply.

The plastic cover can be bought new from Ford for £5.69.

@AntonovAN12 Oh nice one, good find mate!
'd rather have something there than risk a passengers restless feet knocking anything. Clips on with the standard yellow fasteners I presume?

My father-in-law's 2011 MK2.5 Titanium has a passenger panel and not a driver's panel

The black plastic piece clips onto slots in the white plastic housing of the GEM unit itself.

The fibre cover then clips in place using the yellow clips. I fitted both covers to my car.

the GEM gets some pathetic plastic cover that stops people physically kicking the wires on multiple multiplugs

there is no loud noises either side on hers..... just the need for a 6th gear above 60 mph
