Ceramic Brakes or Semi-metallic?

Featured Replies

I'm in need of new brake pads and am wondering whether to go for ceramic or semi-metallic.

I've heard the ATE ceramic brake pads are good. The price difference is negligible so it's just which are the better pads basically.

Also do you think I should replace my discs? They were 10.65mm when measured in January (11mm new and 9mm minimum)

The lip on those discs will prevent new pads working properly, regardless of the centre thickness.  Either replace the discs or remove the lip if replacing pads on that wheel.

I don't have any experience with ceramic pads so can't comment on those.

The pad is not sitting on the disc properly, check for seized calipers.

Just fit new discs and standard pads

What makes you say that the pad isn't fitted properly?

Yes get new disc. I've always been advised to replace pads and disc together

Yeah I've settled on ATE Ceramic pads I think. My alloys do get dusty quite quickly after a wash so the existing brake pads are probably the original ones. I've heard Ford's (FoMoCo) pads are quite dusty.

Just need to find some new discs.

Does anyone happen to know the correct size for the ST Line X?  ECP has two options...308mm and 271mm.

I never mentioned fitting, I say sitting

You can measure them accurately enough without taking the Wheel off.

ok thanks, will have a look in a bit.

Btw do you know the part number for the original rear brake discs? I can't seem to find them.

No, I don't. If you look on the official Ford Parts site you may be able to get it if they list them for that car there.

Which mark and engine?

Most likely 2196429 (271mm).

Unless it's an estate with IRS, then it could be 2210993 (302mm).

So probably still best to measure...

No it's torsion beam as manufacture after 2020 and a hatchback. Thanks for the info i think you're right that it is 271mm, but I'll measure anyway.

Just thought though , maybe better off buying after market discs so that they're coated and help with anti-corrosion.

I'll probably just get Pagid or Brembo discs.

Found halfords are selling the Pagid discs I'm looking at £50 for the pair.

Doesn't say if they are coated but am I right in thinking that all Pagid discs are coated?

They always used to be.  I can't say whether that's changed recently though.

Halfords buy their parts from EuroCarParts so it's worth double checking the price on there, and also at CarParts4Less, their sister company.

They're £38 on ECP and £24 on Halfords. The latter have been doing some great prices recently. I bought some Pagid pads from there last week for a good price but I'm returning them as I think ATE Ceramic pads will be better. Happy to be told it doesn't matter but my wheels do get brake dusty quickly with whichever pads are on there at the moment.

This is the disc, looks like it's coated.

is there any good reason ATE discs are almost twice the price of the Brembos?

I have read that there are such things as fake Brembo discs (mainly on ebay I guess) and that ECP's Brembos aren't up to the standard of what they used to be. Is that right?
