When headlight in the brake lights are on!

Featured Replies

Hello, I have a 2010 Ford focus zetec & looking for advise: when my headlights are on all 3 brake lights are permanently on. They work normally when the headlights are turned off though. I’ve been looking into changing the brake light switch but it looks like there are 2 of them ; a lower black one and the one above is blue. Which do I change? I’ve seen others say one is for cruise control but I don’t have that. Any ideas before I give it a go? (it looks like I will have to become a contortionist to get the switch out!). Is it the standard brake light switch ( black lower one ) or the other switch which is causing the lights to be on when the headlights are on? Cheers

Possible GEM/BCM fault check fuse box under glovebox for water damage

Neither, its not a brake light switch fault.

As Dave has suggested this is probably a GEM/BCM water ingress fault, BUT if you are very lucky it will be a fault with either the left or right brake light bulb (but not the centre one).

Remove both the outer two brake light bulbs and check to see if the fault has gone by watching the centre brake light. If the problem has gone then replace the bulbs. If the problem is still there then it's time to pull the GEM/BCM out and have a look.
