Injector wear/balance- Can Forscan test if too bad?

Featured Replies

I have a 2012 1.6tdci with symptoms of engine stutter and cutting out as indicated below. My question is:  can FORScan be used to test if engine balance should we within the ability of the ECU to control ( without removing the injectors and sending them off to a specialist), as opposed to duff data from sensors being the biggest cause of my symptoms. If so what PIDs should I focus on ?

(I am a novice, but have downloaded and used FORScan a bit  to investigate. I've run a few PIDs. The Cyclinder Ballance at Idle ( engine stated from cold) showed 3 cyclinders very close and cyclinder 4 at just over 0.1 less. When I ran the accelerator PIDs with the Fuel Rail PIDs after start up from cool, I did get some strange spikes as the fuel rail warmed that didn't relate to the accelerator position, making me wonder if this might be a sign the fuel rail pressure and voltage sensor is unreliable?)

Anyway if anyone with suitable knowledge can suggest any specific PIDs or FORScan test to run to help pin down the issue before I go to my local garage  I'd be grateful. My aim is to limit the chances of my local garage heading off in the wrong direction.....although their starting point is " the injectors are probably beyond their wear limit and it's not worth replacing them.......but I'm not happy to drive a car that cuts out repeatedly)

Engine remains fuel efficient once warm and I'm struggle to see how if the injectors are shot it can carry on being efficient when warm.

Attached are the seeming strange spikes on the fuel rail sensor. General Symptoms below:

Stutter: Symptoms

- engine is stuttering when it is driven and warming up, but doesn't do it every day/time; but usually.

- tick over at first start is fine and even. No stutter and plenty of power in early stage of warming up.

- stutter mainly at even moderate revs/easing off a bit. not so obvious when accelerate above that....

- once the car is warm doesn't seem to happen (Edit: has now once).

- seems to be better on warmer days. Either less or occasionally no stutter.

- Stutter didn't happen last winter, just last 3 months. Only work on car that is sort of coincident is remapping ECU back to official software 5 months ago.

- I do very few short trips. Most of my mileage is between 50 and 65mph at 1800-2000 revs circa 10000 miles per year. I am very light on the accelerator.....focused on the MPG.

- Monitoring battery voltage in morning before start up, non-stutter trips seem most likely when voltage 12.5v and above. Morning battery voltage has often been circa 12.2v on cold mornings. Starter motor often hesitates on start up (but has all year, not just recently)

- DTC’s have not been triggered so far just because of the stutter.

Stability Control Warning/Stalling - Symptoms

- Not necessarily directly related to stutter ? Common theme is Stability Control light comes on.

- most incidents in warming up phase with stuttering, when slowing towards a standstill and dip clutch & foot off accelerator, then the Stability control light comes on and engine cuts out. This scenario is usually accompanied by recording a DTC. Have had P0194( followed an hour later by P0691); P0193 ( accompanied by P0152) & P02D1 ( injector 3 offset learning limit). Have also had the orange Service Engine Now warning.

- Have had 4 incidents at higher speed where Stabilty Control light has come on and gone into limp mode. so had to stop and restart engine. For 3, the engine was not quite fully warm. The last was fully warm, just after having slowed to 40mph after 2hrs on the motorway. (The engine also started stuttering at 40mph and continued after restart). The link on the Stability control issue seems to be coming off the accelerator and I think dipping the clutch. And I note that when you do this the revs often seem to flutter widely rather than drop smoothly.

Other DTC’s present

- U2013 Switch Pack Component Failure – DTC maturing – intermittent at time of request

- B115E – Camera Module – Bus Signal/message Failures – DTC present at time of request
