Focus Mk3 1.6 possible turbo boost problem. Help please.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone i am new here. I found this site while trying to sort out a power problem with my 2013 mk3 1.6 petrol ecoboost. The car was running perfect and its been a great car. I went to start it the other morning and it took longer to start than usual. Usually it starts on the button first time. Got it started and went to pull away and stalled it several times. It would pull away with extra revs which is unusual for it. Once its going it runs pretty well between 1500 and 3000 revs maybe a little bit jerky at the lower revs. It accelerates fine until 3000 revs where it bogs down and wont go over it. Can anyone lead me in the right direction on where to start looking please. I am at a loss. Any help will be much appreciated.

I had diagnostics done by the AA and the fault codes are mixed.

They are:

Engine management 1 - AG3 / Engine management Motronic MED 17.0P055711 - Brake booster pressure sensor. Error Message : Short to ground.P050F00 - Brake vacuum sensor. Error Message : Pressure too low.P008762 - Rail: Fuel pressure. Error Message : Signal error.P132B21 - Boost pressure solenoid valve. Error Message : Signal too low.

I had the codes cleared and these are the ones that came back again, I'm at a complete lose on where to even start. Still the same symptoms. Any one out there that might be able to shed some light on this.

That's an odd list of faults.  I'm wondering whether there's a split vacuum hose or even a faulty vacuum pump?  That would affect both brake servo and turbo wastegate.

The low fuel pressure codes could equally be causing the engine issues though.  That could be caused by a faulty low pressure fuel pump in the tank.  If you have the ability to physically measure the pressure from the lift pump that could help us work out whether that's working ok or not?  If that's not working then the rail pressure will also be too low.

A pressure (and vacuum) gauge could also check the vacuum pump and other pipes etc for leaks.
I think they are a very useful tool (I'm lucky enough to have a Mityvac but that was an expensive Chrimbo present which I tohugh I'd never use - How wrong!):
e.g. (make sure it does both pressure and vacuum making it doubly useful?):

Some of the brake bleeders only do vacuum.

Thank you for you help. It gives me a starting point on where to look. I was wondering if it might be the Vacuum pump. The vacuum gauge suggested on ebay looks good and an affordable price. Thank you once again for your help i will have a look and let you know how it goes .

Just to update on this problem. I took it to a garage with better diagnostics. Turned out to be the High pressure fuel pump. All sorted and running well again.

Thanks for coming back and goes to show the difficulty of long distance diagnosis despite our best efforts 😉
