Ticking/Rattle On Start Up/Drive

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I have recently noticed a rattle/ticking on start up and when accelerating/reving. I can pin point it to around the crankshaft pulley area, it seems to become quieter once warm on idle but still rattles when driving. Ive attached a video of the noise, the engine has had the tensioner, timing belt water pump etc due to a replacement engine. It didnt make the noise taking it home but it has developed over the past few days.

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks

Josh

Probably best to take it back to the garage that did the work.  That does sound like a knackered pulley bearing, hopefully on the aux belt run instead of the cambelt run.

Hey again Tom, I was trying to research last night and did hear some the crankshaft pulleys can rattle and make noise. How easy is it to tell if its the outer or timing belt sprocket?

The timing belt sprocket is solid so that one can't rattle.

The outer auxiliary one is made of two pieces of metal with a rubber damper in-between.  So that's the one that can rattle if the rubber breaks down.

From that video, I couldn't pinpoint it to the crank though, it could be one of the others such as AC pump or waterpump etc.  I have seen the odd brand new waterpump fail quickly so wouldn't rule that out yet.

There is also a tensioner for the timing belt behind the cover, the bearing in that could have a manufacturing defect as well.

Ah I didnt realise the internal crankshaft pulley was fixed, didnt realise that. It could be the outer pulley as when im under the car I can hear it coming from lower end. I did use a stethascope over the air con, water pump and steering pump and couldnt hear anything.
