Software update

Featured Replies

If i garage done a software update on my car would all my data be gone is it like a format on a computer

Car was in getting work done and I think there's a few discrepancies with what's been  done

It fully depends on which module has had the software updated.

Modern Ford models have approximately 20 different modules that are all connected to a (CANbus) network. Each of the modules needs to be updated separately. Ford basically has the policy to only update the software if there is a reason to do this. Updating 1 module does not affect other modules.

It was a garage that said software update and charged 180 pounds plus vat

I suggest to ask them which module they updated and for what reason. It is even better if they can show you the update history (version numbers of both the old and new software).

180 pounds plus vat seems a bit excessive to me unless they updated several modules. With the right tools updating a single module generally takes less than 15 minutes.

It's making a noise going to 2nd to 3rd

The software update seems to be unrelated to the other items on the invoice. It definitely has no relation to the gearbox repair or the shifting noise you are experiencing.

Bearing failure/excessive wear on the 6-speed Ford/Getrag B6 transmission is a common problem that only occurs on the Diesel engines that have this transmission. Especially the 1.6 TDCI ECOnetic in the Focus MK3 is well known for this problem but it can also occur on the later 1.5 TDCI/1.5 ECOblue engines.

The problem is basically caused by high torque at too low RPM's. Driving with high torque at too low RPM's results in insufficient lubrication of the gearbox which causes excessive wear and eventually bearing failure. High torque at low RPM's is just a characteristic of a Diesel engine which is the main reason why only the Diesel engines suffer from this and all Petrol engines with the B6 transmission are not affected.

Thanks for the info

software is never updated for fun - if software updates exist - its basically an admission it was made faulty - so under consumer rights act its their problem for 6 years in the UK - and its particularly applicable on expensive items like a car

unless the work was carried out at a main dealership - I'd be utterly shocked any software was updated - and even then its very unusual (but this is changing rapidly on newer stuff - they are so poorly made, everything current gets software tweaks every other day to try and make something behave slightly less badly.... but on a 2020 car Ford should be applying this cheap / or better still free for the first few years)

the only way they'd bother would be a specific requirement to fix an the issue it came in for - for a non franchised garage it would need to be a really rare super specialist, who knew exactly what they were doing - and had kit virtually no one has ! (there is a small overlap here where the Russian's make a tool for Ford's that is well known, very good and is affordable - but such capability is extremely rare in the automotive world)

that bill is huge - and your new noise a serious concern - and as JW192 suggests a std manual box didn't need software - my suspicious nature suggests you have been ripped off by crooks are us - and it needs to go back to someone competent

if its a 2020 car and lowish miles you could fight the gearbox repair under that same legislation - it gets far easier for a court to help - where you have lots of evidence its affecting a lot of others and its a big brand that should know better.....

EDIT

bearings can't cause wheel spin ?

perhaps you had a new clutch too - (many confuse clutch slip with a wheel spin issue), if so a clutch is a wear item related to the driving style and thus not something you can claim for.....
