Intermittent starting problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am new to the forum having only just recently bought my first Ford, and hopefully someone can help here!

I have a 10 plate 1.4 petrol Fusion  had issues getting it started, It turns over fine on the starter, and when it feels like the engine has fired or about to start, it just dies, and the starter sounds like it is still spinning, then stops. I can come to it, turn the key, fires up ok, then other times, it as thought the starter engages the flywheel then just spins. This happens when I have had booster on at the same time. This rules out the battery, I've also fitted another starter and get the same symptoms. When it does start, it runs perfectly fine.

Has anyone else had anything like this? Any help appreciated...

Cheers

Teeth missing off the ring gear ?

Thaks for the input. I checked the flywheel when I tried the replacement starter.  I was wondering if it is something to do with the key, or ignition barrel ?

The starter "continuing to spin" comment is a real confusion here especially after it has been changed  and may be a separate issue? (unless both have the same fault, is there a one way clutch in these models?)
Otherwise it becomes a general point of crank no start and is it misfiring during the starting or dead but when it starts it is fine?
Fuel, spark, compression and it should go so back to basics?

Check starter relay and is there a way to trigger a start to rule out the key/ignition switch (does it have an immobiliser?)

Are there any fault codes when it doesn't start, can you use live data for fuel pressure etc to try to find something that is causing this fault (long distance diagnosis is difficult without more information so I may be completely wrong - as ever 😉)

Did you rotate the engine one full revolution to check all the teeth. If im correct 4 cylinder engines USUALLY stop, due to compression in the cylinders, in one of two positions when they are shut off and 6 cyl ones in three positions. The net result is only a small part of the ring gear gets the initial engagement from the starter on start up,so promoting wear in that area. I said its usual but not always the case that in would stop rotating in one of those two area's, so full rotation is required to check

Thank you for your suggestions.  I have just cleaned all the earth cables. Same thing happens, so it's not them. The starter relay could be a good idea. I even thought of a faulty ignition barrel, or key. So a few of you may not be far off. The strange thing is it runs perfectly OK once started,  so it must be in the starting system. I have a topdon scanner I've just bought, I've plugged it in but don't understand all the information it reads. There is something about continuous faults, but as I don't understand how it works, I may as well not have bought it 😅 zI will plug it in again and have a look, if I can remember what vimes up, I will post it on the forum, maybe someone can decipher it for me.

Hi again,

Just put the scanner on. Only code is P0500-EO.

We all live and learn. You need to put that back in the box and file it away in the "someday it might be useful" draw. 🤔

You own a Ford and as such need something that will accurately read all of the Ford specific DTC's. Now most people can't afford to pay the thousands of pounds needed to buy a Ford dealership tool and so the very best alternative is to use FORScan. The software is free for a windows laptop and around £10 for the phone version. You will of course need the correct connecting lead or dongle depending on which version you are using.

The code shown P0500 is a very broad generic code relating to the speed sensor located on the gearbox (if fitted) but most Fords use the signals from the ABS wheel sensors. Either way the P0500 code is not going to stop the vehicle from starting.

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OR

For diagnostic use only:

Ha Ha I think you may be right.

I originally i bought it for servicing, rewind hand brakes, service lights, etc, not deep diagnosis. This is my daughters first car, I have just bought her it, with it being a basic ford, I thought, great it should be ok for this car.

The trouble is, it's intermittent, my last car, had an intermittent problem, Stratstone Jaguar, ( I know, they are the pants), could not find fault, so I rejected it. I will have a look at the forscan you mention, depends on the price, she can live with the odd miss start if it is very expensive. I may be cheaper to take it to a garage.

Forscan is free, as above.

Removed as pointless.

RAC guy said it is the throttle body.

So off to eBay to buy a cheap one to see if that cures the problem.  Problem I now have, there are many. When I search for throttle body, the one that are for sale are, 2007 to 2010, or just 2007. My question is, will a 2007 1.4 petrol fit my daughters car ?
