Focus mk4 questions.

Featured Replies

Hello, i have recently started driving a focus mk4 (2022 production year) and i'm unsure if the engine on the car is using a wet belt or timing chain. The engine is the 1.0L ecoboost with 125 PS and 999 volume (photo below).

I'm only curious because i wanted to know when i should worry about changing the belt or chain and from what i understand, at the time i should also have a look at the oil pump. The car has at the moment just above 54000 kilometers on it. I recently had the oil and filters changed (used 5w-20 oil but i didn't/forgot to ask what brand/model specifically they used) and also had the service give it a general inspection where the only thing found is that i should change the brake pads on the back wheels in a few thousands kilometers.

Is there anything else i should pay attention to? It's my first car and i want to take decent care of it for as long as possible as i quite enjoy it except the things i read about the engine.

No Focus Mk4 or Mk4.5 with an Ecoboost engine has a wet timing belt, they all use a timing chain.

Also the Rear Pads are not very thick to start with but according to Ford they do not need changed until the Thickness is down to 1.5mm.

I would be surprised if the pads were that low after only 54000 Km.

Ford recommend Castrol but as long as it meets the Ford spec WSS-M2C948-B given in the handbook any reputable brand should be ok.

NB you still have the wet belt for oil pump drive which must be changed at maximum 10 years/150,000 miles whichever first. This is still an expensive operation.

I see, thank you for clarifying that up, didn't see it clearly mentioned anywhere i looked so far.

Do you have any info/advice for maintenance regarding the timing chain and oil pump belt? From what i found on my regional website, it's recommended to change the chain and oil pump belt after 240000 km (150.000 miles)/10 years (LTS 21 567 5 and LTS 21 716 5 respectively) but that seems a bit too long to be honest?

Can't tell you how the car was driven for most of these kms as it was purchased through a local re-seller. And the car already had over 50k of those kilometers done before we got it.

The chain engines haven't been around long enough to test the oil pump belt longevity yet.

Good news is that there are plenty from 2018 & 2019 that 'should' fail before yours as long as servicing schedules have been kept to.

Personally I would expect the belt to last 10 years on a car that's driven daily and warmed up every time.

Fair enough, honestly i expect it to be a really long while before i'm even close for the number of kilometers to be high enough to have to change those. It's more likely i will have to change them due to age. As far as servicing goes, i plan to at least never let the oil go for more than 10k km or 1 year and so far so good on that note.

I have a Oil Pump Welt Belt and Chain in my 2019 1.5 Focus and here is something I posted a few days ago regarding  Oil Pump Wet Belt
