Strange sound at idle

Featured Replies

My 2016 MkIII 1.0 Ecoboost engine makes a strange sound in idle and cuts out after about 1 minute. Battery is New and registered with the EMU. Does anyone have any insights as to what this could be? (Please see the video https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Q0HOeb5yRn_Xnd7QCSgYCEY0n7dIiqy5/view?usp=sharing) Don't want to drive it unless its going to the garage. Thanks in advance

I've listened to your video.

Holly S4it Batman that sounds bad 🙁

I assume there is no oil pressure warning light flickering on ?

No warning lights at all. When i get it up to 30 mile an hour its fine no noises at all. It only happens in idle. No error codes coming up on the diagnostics either

Does it idle fine if you hold it at 1000rpm on the throttle?

That does sound horrendous on the video.  But I'm wondering whether it's just an idle misfire that's dropping the revs too low.

Yes when you idle at 1000 rpm it sounds normal. I was thinking that it could be some sensor that is not working as should be. Battery which is 1 month old is also not charging

The alternator needs to be spinning at around 1000rpm to charge.  So either the engine is struggling because the battery charge is too low.  Or the alternator is not charging at idle because the engine speed is too low.

Easiest way to rule out the alternator would be to hook up jump leads from another car (not just a jump pack) and see if it idles OK when being charged from another cars alternator.

I also assume you've only checked for fault codes with a generic OBD reader, as there will almost certainly be some on Forscan if the battery isn't charging.

across this forum, if you read the woeful mess that describes most owners experience of a modern Ford - I'd say yours was running just how ford wanted them to operate
