Suitable black paint for rear brake drums?

Featured Replies

As the title says.

I am planning to remove the surface rust using an angle grinder with a wire wheel first. This will be done with the wheel off, but drum still on the hub.

I will brush the paint on for a thicker coating.

Which type of paint will last without peeling off or flaking?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'd use smooth Hammerite.

I used a cheap Hammerite substitute on mine and they were still fine 3 years later.  Drums don't get used enough to overheat under normal road conditions.

I used black engine lacquer on ours thinking it would be more heat-resistant than Hammerite but as Tom says the drums probably never get very hot.

In the days when I cared about such things, smooth black Hammerite was my choice...

I've also used smooth Hammerite on drums in the past, no problems.

Thanks for the replies.

The car came with steel wheels when I bought it so it wasn't a problem before.

I have had five spoke alloys for a while. These make the rusty drums more obvious, especially with clean wheels. I noticed the other day that it looks a lot worse in bright daylight.

I have found that you can actually buy aluminium fake brake discs to cover rear drums.

Mine came with steel wheels too, I love them Totally reliable, no worries about kerbing, and all painted with smooth Hammerite! They also maintain tire pressure from one year to the next!! They also wear plastic wheel trims which can be changed on a whim 😂

I brushed on a paint called technogrip which is sold as being suitable to apply straight to bare metal.

I will have to wait to see how long it lasts.

As mentioned above I unused smooth Hammerite on my MK2.5.

I give all a good grinder wire brush clean and then a good coat of the hammerite.

I used to use a red oxide undercoat but I found it made no real difference to the length of time the hubs needed a fresh up again so just kept the red oxide for any underbody paint as a primer.
