Time to buy the fordscan?

Featured Replies

So after 40k miles and 6 year ownership my 1.0 2013 decides to throw it's first yellow engine light on a drive

I haven't turned the engine back on yet after switching off but if it comes back on tomorrow I'll have to buy the fordscan cable I guess ?

If it's just something rubbish like the ABS sensor I can live with that until the MOT in may which I presume will just be an advisory anyway, it's only a fail if it's light is disabled?

Fyi came on randomly during the drive, no limp mode, no other lights, no stuttering or changes in rpm at idle etc.

Probably something minor if the car didn't try and shut down. Belt was changed less than 15k ago and oil/coolant fine

Thanks car I love you too

Engine light on while running is now an MOT failure.

(h) Engine MIL inoperative or indicating a malfunction Major

You dont buy ForScan, you download it for free. Buy the vLinker cable and follow the instructions.

How frustrating. Just spent £500 on new tyres to get it through the MOT. Rip.

At least the manual says "Service engine soon" implying it's not immediate, but at some point in the near future 😉

I'll buy a fordscan cable I recon and see what it tells me. At 80k on the clock things like this are gonna be more frequent

Thanks

My luck I buy the cable and Bet it'll never come up again and be one of those codes that disappears when the engine turns off. Lol

Forscan and cable will always be useful for Ford and I believe the cable is good for any EOBD vehicle and software.

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

For diagnostic use only:

Thanks I've bought that it's coming tomorrow.

If the issue persists I'll put the codes here

It's rear not a P0420-09 catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1

Other threads suggest changing the after cat oxygen sensor and then seeing

P0420-

More often than not on the earlier 1.0 engines that DTC does truely mean that the cat is faulty. I have changed more cats than O2 sensors on these engines (excluding the new ones 2019+).

If you could monitor the O2 sensor 2 (post cat) it should give nice a steady reading as the cat is doing its job. If it's a bit erratic then I'd suggest the cat has failed.

Ok I'll have a play with forescan and see if I can find anything relating to what that bloke has said.

I guess with cat changes the labour is the most expensive part? Google suggests replacement cats around £200 is that right ?

Wow just been quoted £900 Inc labour, gaskets etc) for a cat change (genuine ford cat as they said they had trouble with aftermarket ones).

+ MOT and full service that's the best part of a month's pay check

Not sure, this is my local garage I trust and use for years. The actual cat is quoted as £590 coming to over £700 with VAT, the rest being labour (150) and parts like one gasket being £20, another being £8 and then nuts and studs

Genuine cats are full of precious metals like rhodium and palladium in order to meet new car standards.

Aftermarket cats are only designed to meet MOT requirements.

P0420 won't cause any running issues though.  If the light stays off for a good period of time, just reset it now & then.  (And obviously directly before MOT).

Fair enough, but i for one dont trust anyone, they are all out to fleece us. Ford are one of the worst with their pricing, its absolutely disgusting the price they want for spares DAMHIK. How much have the garage marked up the CAT ? Bet its at least 10% more like 25% in reality. Im speaking through the experiences ive had and that why i source my spares (not that i need much) elsewhere when i can. The weird thing is parts youd think would be expensive arent that bad, then something you think would be cheap is shockingly expensive. Take a focus front wishbone, ford want £290 each side !!! i bought a PAIR of aftermarket ones for £55 ! The quality is every bit as good as Ford OEM,steel used as thick as oem and ball joint every bit as good. This is just one example of RIP OFF Ford pricing.

Typical the lights gone off after about 100 miles. Probably won't see it again for 10 years
