Engine warning light came on with a flashing cog

Car suddenly stated spluttering, the engine seem to cut out and the centre information panel light up and  the symbol of a cog with an exclamation mark in its centre.  Luckly enough I was just around the corner from home and  managed to get it home in limp mode.

Has any come across this or had the problem and what was the problem. As I woukd likevyo fix myself if possible.
