2009 focus 1.8 tdci wet belt

Featured Replies

Hi there. My Focus 1.8tdci engine decided to just cut out this week while I was driving. I lost power including steering and brakes and a message came up saing Engine Failure. It turns out that this engine has a second wet belt, which I didn't know about until my mechanic told me. My question is what kind of damage would this do to the engine. I changed the dry belt about 25000 miles ago thinking I was safe. I had a 2001 Focus with what I thought the same engine and that did 00000 miles, which is why I bought this later model. The car is a 2009 and has done nearly 190000 miles. Is the cost of repair woth it considering the value of the car? Whats your thoughts folks?

When the belt breaks, the valves stop wherever they are, but the pistons keep moving.  So any open valves are likely to be bent or snapped after being hit by the piston.  I would expect major internal damage.

I don't think repair of a 190k engine is worth considering.  If you can find a low mileage engine with proof that the lower belt has been done recently, or a pre-2008 model which used a chain in place of the wetbelt, then you could keep the car on the road like that.

However, given that the car will still be worth almost nothing with that mileage, it might be best just to scrap it and put the money into a newer, lower mileage vehicle instead.
