Knock on each side on initial pull away

Featured Replies

2009 Ford Focus 1.6i Manual

A knock/click happens on both sides of the front end when I first pull away forwards, doesn't happen again until I pull away back wards. If I pull away really gently it doesn't happen. It very rarely happens over pot holes. I replaced CV axles 2 years ago, had front shocks, springs, top mounts done and aligned about 7 months ago, (started just before that) and done my track rods and ends couple months ago. You can hear it loud outside the car, fella at work said it could be drop links (bought very cheap pair about 3 years ago)

Any ideas?

Update on this:

Still happens, but now I can hear it a little more when driving, mainly when getting off the clutch when downshifting. All the engine/torque mounts are fine. I have just replaced Wishbones, droplinks and put a new Axle nut on each side and torqed to spec, still got this noise. Could both the CV axles be knackered? They are J&R branded and have only been on the car for about 10k miles. I think its definitely driveline related though since If I rev the car high when first pulling away, i dont hear the knock on each side or while driving. I'd like to rule anything out before I go and buy new CV axles, any help or ideas is appreciated.

I suggest checking the splined connection between the driveshafts and the wheel hubs.

Clicking sounds when driving away forward (especially after having driven backwards) were a well-known problem on the Focus MK2/MK2.5. These sounds were caused by (normal) play of the splined connection between the driveshafts and the wheel hubs. This play allows the driveshafts to rotate inside the spline of the hub which causes the clicking sound. Eventually the splines will wear which makes the sound even worse.

When a customer complained the official solution from Ford was to disassemble the driveshafts, clean the splines and apply Loctite between the splined connection. After assembly the car cannot be driven for approximately 12 Hours to let the Loctite cure.
