MK3.5 Focus died without warning.

Featured Replies

Hello. My focus is dead. I stopped at a junction, pulled away and it just died. No power. No noises. No leaks. I had the "service engine soon" warning and EML light on. Scanned it, found several codes, replaced the cam sensors and the turbo but to no avail. The engine just spins, does not fire. Its a 1.0 ecoboost.  I have spark, pressure at the fuel rail and compression. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Timing belt has likely snapped. If that is the case then the engine is scrap 🙁

Well how many of those that died were warned before that?

If it's got compression on all cylinders then the belt hasn't snapped.

What codes are coming up now?

I totally agree.

I do have my doubts that all cylinders do have full compression, or perhaps by some freak of rotation of the camshaft all valves are virtually closed 🤔

I suppose the belt could've lost some teeth and the head timing is out.

I'd have to get it stripped and checked before I carried on

Have you had low oil pressure warning on too?

I pulled it all apart and the belt has sheared multiple teeth off.  Is it completely gone as its an interference engine or should I just replace the head.

How much can you get a head for?  What's the mileage?

Unless this is a known good engine with excellent service history and low mileage o wouldn't bother with the hassle of a head swap.

It is an interference engine but the pistons are pretty strong to cope the boost and direct injection.  Even if it has bent valves the pistons are probably ok.  But it's a lot of time and effort stripping to confirm.

69k ish. Dont know the history of the car as it didnnt come with one when i bought it. The new head is £553 from Pumaspeed.

Not worth it then.  Bottom end could be heavily worn by now.  DIY rebuilds on these rarely work out long term.  I would recommend a full engine replacement.

ApprovedEngines are another reliable option, as well as Pumaspeed - 1.0 EcoBoost engine | Purchase new or reconditioned – Approved Engines

Damn. Oh well, would i better off asking if the insurance would write it off due to high engine replacement cost. Or just scrap it and eat the finance remaining

You can ask the insurance company, but engine failures aren't usually covered, unless caused in a crash, flood or fire.

The finance company may be able to help you though.  It's definitely worth talking to them if you've still got a lot of finance remaining.

A full engine swap is a much easier job than a head swap.  You might find the overall cost, including labour, isn't that much more.  Definitely worth getting a few quotes for that before condemning it to scrap.

So the cause was the timing belt?

Yes
