Which is best engine to have in the Focus estate

Featured Replies

So I am looking to buy a Ford focus estate and have no Idea which engines to avoid and which is the best to go for. I have been looking at vehicles around 2019-2022 I keep hearing things like avoid the wet belt cam and water pump, but what are my options. I am unlikely to be doing many miles per year probably around 3k  any advice would be much appreciated

None of the Mk4 Focus EcoBoost have the wet timing belt. Although they still have the wet belt to drive the oil pump.

The most reliable engine for a Mk4 Focus would seem to be the 1.5 EcoBlue but if your doing such low mileage then diesel may not be good. So your options are a 1.0 EcoBoom.

Regardless of which engine you decide on, you can expect to have many, many, many problems with constant low battery issues when you only do 3000 miles a year. You will need to keep the battery on regular charge with a Smart charger.

ST 2.3 Litre is very reliable, if not abused and would suit your mileage

That's the only petrol engine I would recommend

Other than that, get a Corolla👍

Glad you find it funny!!😉

I can't seriously recommend a 1.0 or 1.5 Ecoboom

Or a 2.0 Ecoblue due to the wet belt issues, he doesn't want a diesel anyway.

The only engine, other than the 1.5 Ecoblue, that's any good, is the ST 2.3

Funny, but true

Why can't we recommend the 3 pot 1.5 EcoBoost?  I haven't seen any of those break yet!  1.5 EcoBlues seem to be broken every other week on here, I certainly couldn't trust one of those myself!

I started a similar thread recently which you might be interested in. I am currently leaning towards a 3-cylinder 1.5L petrol engine (150PS or 180PS I don't mind either way), but note it was only available 2018-2020.
