Mk2.5 2.0 TDCI Torque rod

Featured Replies

Hello alll, it has been some time.

I need a bit of help locating the source of a rattle. I think I know what is causing it (as per the title) but want lay out the past events to form a picture.

I've just replaced the steering rack and had to lower the front subframe to do so. On the first attempt I didn't remove the bolt (my mistake) that connects the gearbox to the mount that fits within the subframe (it sandwiches in for want of a better description) as such the gear boxed moved down with the subframe a bit while supported by a hydraulic jack. I've put the new rack in and put the car back together again and the existant knocking sound before dropping the rack is worse. There was a bit of knocking before I started the job and now it is worse. All bolts for the subframe, rack, ball joints etc are all torqued up.

So by my logic, the torque rod mount thing was starting to fail due to the rubber material deteriorating. By not removing the correct bolt first and adding excess load, I feel I have damaged the mount more and have made the ratttle worse.

Would it be a fair assessment this is the problem? Or is there something I might be overlooking? There is no excess play or movement in any of the drive shafts, support bearings oe CV joints. All subframe bolts and ball joints are torqued to spec too.

Thank you in advance!

Kye
