Metal in the fuel system

Featured Replies

I have recently found out that when my fuel pump broke down it released metal particles/ shavings into the fuel system. I have had a new fuel pump, new injectors and new fuel filter fitted. Even though this work has been done the garage said after investigating that I have replace the whole fuel system now as its contaminated, is this the case or can it be fixed?

The whole system should have been fully cleaned out before the new parts were fitted.  I'd be asking the garage why they didn't do that.

It originally went to the garage because when driving it wouldn't rev past 2000rpm. They said it was the fuel pump and fitted a new one and new filter. I ran the car for about a month then took it back to get the injectors checked and was told the electrics on them had failed. So I had 4 new injectors fitted. When I took it on a long run the mpg had gone down. So I took it back to the garage who took the fuel filter out cut it in half and confirmed it had metal in it. Is there any way of sorting it without paying another fortune on the car and replacing everything again. Someone said if I keep changing the filter on it, the metal should be filtered out over a period of time. But from what I have read the metal is in it now and everything the fuel has touched needs replacing.

When a high pressure pump fails, the filter should always be checked for metal.

It's too late now.  The new parts are contaminated again.

It's a guessing game as to how long before you get another pump or injector failure.  But personally I'd just run it as it is now.  No harm in changing the filter a couple of times but the damage is already done.

They don't need to replace everything, things like the tank and pipes can be cleaned.  That is what they should have done before fitting a new pump.

Ok thank you

Why do professionals appear to be totally ignorant of "common sense" in matters like this?
Replacing all of those very expensive parts without flushing the whole system to try to ensure as far as possible that all debris was removed.
This is a rhetorical question!

I would like to see the fuel filter with those metal particles. I have two Ford cars with same  2,0 TDCI engine, and both have a lot of metal particles inside fuel filter housing on the bottom but not on the filter itself. I think those metal particles with light golden color are common and comes from gas station from their pumps.

From Alan (Howatt) You Tube, the particles from break up of the fuel pump are shiny - he says "Glitter"?
