Hiss from Brake Pedal ?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, Im a newbie here so sorry if this issue has been addressed in earlier posts, if so please let me know a link.

Right my 1.7TDCI Focus Estate Tiatanium has developed a hard break pedal after being depressed for more than two three seconds. Rev the engine and the pressure rebuilds giving you brakes again for that time. I've checked over everything system wise and its fine, however its hissing losing pressure from the brake pedal inside the car, not the slave not break fluid not a collapsed hose as said ive been through it and isolated to the pedal.

Its my first ford focus and even though its 212556 miles and a diesel and a work horse brakes are something I dont wish to ignore!

Any help advice point in right direction as dont have a haines manual for one of these given its a 56 plate its old and leaks into the boot also electronically decides when its going to show you the milage and dashboard display when it wants too. Has its faults but brakes are something of a necessity! HELP!

Sounds like a vacuum leak - not just literally in terms of the sound you are hearing but also it would explain the other symptoms of having a hard brake pedal (due to no vacuum-induced assistance) and also the revving of the engine restoring sufficient vacuum once more. It'd need testing to determine whether it's the vacuum pump, connecting pipework or brake servo.

If you're sure it's the pedal end then it'll be the servo seal.  Not an easy job to replace the servo.

(PS - these are usually known as 1.8 TDCI)
