2018 MK4 1.5 EcoBlue (120) Manual Engine Issues

Featured Replies

Good Afternoon,

I am wondering if someone would be able to help/shed some light or even know of anyone having this fault before because I am at my whits end now with this car.

basically for the past few months my above detailed car has had an issue where, on idle the revs blip (drop down and then rev up) they do this without any throttle input and sometimes even result in the engine stalling, this happens in reverse as well where the engine will drop revs suddenly. After some time of driving I then seem to lose all turbo input and no gear shift indicator which I have never had an issue with before, strangely if I turn the engine off and on again this section resets for a short time, drives perfectly and then after about 5 minutes no turbo again.

it has thrown up a number of engine management lights which came back as the following:

MAF sensor in range but higher than expected, Diesel particulate filter pressure sensor A - circuit malfunction, MAF sensor/volume air flow sensor - low input and EGR sensor C - circuit high.

These have all been investigated/changed and not resolved the issue. I have had the intake cleaned and while this did help the issue slightly it didn’t resolve it.
strangely when it was in the garage and the technician was listening, he thought it may have been an issue with an injector while the engine was dropping its revs, when he lent on the top of the engine to listen, magically the problem stopped, he let the pressure off and it started again. We had thought this was the issue, the top of the engine (cam cover I believe) was changed due to there been seals in it and thought it might be an issue with this, then the injectors were checked and no issues there.
started the car again and the issue resumed, it seems when you lean on the top of the engine the problem goes away, safe to say this can’t be a solve to have someone leaning on the engine when driving around.

does this sound familiar to anyone or does anyone have any ideas what to try next?
I have changed the MAF sensor, cleaned intake, checked the engine timing, inspected the EGR’s, checked the injectors, changed the cam cover and everything seems ok so far, I am just running out of ideas.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

thank you

Sounds like a lose connection in the wiring harness that goes over the engine.

Yep or a poor engine earth maybe?

Early MK4s were appalling for software glitches too, I'd be tempted to get all the software updated

Is that something you have to go to a dealer for or is that something you can do with forscan? (I have never had to try it before, but my MK4 which I will hopefully be collecting tomorrow is a 2019, so early ISH)

Module software updates is a Ford dealer thing. Normally they just charge for the time. Minimum of 1 hour.
