Wet carpet in drivers footwell mk3 focus estate 2.0tdci

Featured Replies

Hi guys, ive noticed my carpet in the footwell is wet after i got out of my car and nearly slipped over.

Ive recently found that my coolant levels have been dropping in the hot weather and assumed there was a coolant leak from burst pipe or seal (179k miles so most things are starting to wear)

However not using my aircon for the last week or so and my coolant level seems to be the same.

Could this fluid making my carpet wet be part of my blowers/heater matrix and thats the reason my coolant has needed topping up when i put the aircon on?

Coolant flows through the heater matrix all the time.

When you request cold air, you're just moving a flap inside the box to divert air away from the heater matrix.

So using AC won't make any difference to a heater matrix leak.  If it is coolant, I'd expect it all the time.

AC will create moisture itself though.  This is meant to drain out under the car.  But if the pipe is blocked or split, that moisture could be building up in the driver's footwell.

You can check the AC drain pipe by removing the kick panel on the centre console and then peeling the carpet back a bit.

Hi check the heater pipe o rings up under drivers footwell to the left of the clutch pedal, 2 of them, known to be problematic.  Do a search on here.
