Oil pressure low

Featured Replies

I've changed my cambelt on my transit 2.0l as it was due on mileage. At the same time I had the low oil pressure light on. I believed that replacing the oil pump belt would fix this problem while I did the cambelt. Unfortunately it's now all back together and the fault is persisting. When I press on the accelerator the light goes out. Any help or recommendations please help

Changing the wet belts after the low oil pressure light has come on is very like putting a sticking plaster on a broken leg.

In 99%of cases once the low oil pressure light is on then the engine is beyond saving.

Did you remove the sump and the oil pickup strainer?

It sounds like the oil ways are blocked or the pickup is still clogged up with bits of the old belt.

Yeah all of that has been rem9ved and replaced. I've done enough wet belts on transits to not take chances. It all gets replaced.

If that's all been changed and assuming the filter has been changed that only leaves the oil pump itself.  These pumps do have a mechanical sprung pressure relief valve which may have failed.  So it can only create pressure at higher RPMs.

If you've got any way of measuring oil pressure (from the turbo feed possibly?) then that'll save having to remove the sump again to test at least.

Stick a new oil pump on, quickly, and hope you haven't caused any damage.

I have a 2019 Focus automatic with 33k miles. Fortunately it doesn’t have a wet cam belt but likely has a wet oil pump belt. 3 Q’s. When should I have the oil pump belt changed at the earliest and what symptoms to check if the belt is prematurely degrading eg check for rubber bits in the oil change or ask Ford to check what on the next service? Will Ford give a contribution if/when belt needs replacing?

I sieved my Oil through one of these fine sieves the last time I changed it and there were no bits of Belt whatsoever.

It does seem though that if your Engine is a 1.0 Litre one and an Auto then there is a problem with the Tensioner on the Oil Pump Belt failing and stripping the Belt rather than the normal deterioration.

I believe the recommendation for change is 10 years and I don't know if Ford will contribute anything although they should.

You can with some Engines, not with a lot of others.
