How many miles is your car on, and I'm assuming it's diesel?

Most likely dual mass flywheel

would there be any other signs of it be the DMF. Really dont fancy the expense at the minute.

One thing that was strange is if i push down on the engine the sound goes away?

Plus gears are shifting absolutely fine.

A dmf won't affect gear shifts (provided it's only partially failed)

Could also be a bad engine mount, can you feel any play in one of the three mounts?

Dont really have the space to get to the lower mount and nearside one. the other is fine. no play at all.

More than likely (as these tend to go bad) it's the lower mount and the rubber has failed allowing it to vibrate at idle.

Get someone to film the engine as you rev it, if it moves back and forth excessively then it's the lower mount

AHH superstar, I did do this yesterday. I could get a view throught the gap in the bonnet and body and the engine was definitely excessively moving. I'll try this today so I can get a better look.

So had it into the garage and im happy to report it was just the gearbox mount! So all in i managed to get that done, a new tyre and alignment, full major service and break pads for £450 so im pretty happy.
