Focus MK3.5 DRL issues

Featured Replies

Hi, try to keep it short and sweet but when driving to work today I've clocked the reflection of my car in a nice new shiny car Infront of me. I've noticed that the front driver driver side DRL was dimmer then the passenger side. Thinking it was maybe a weird bug after just indicating, I've switched headlights from auto to DRL mode and they both went dim.

They are essentially in the parking lights mode with half brightness, not off coloured or anything like Mondeo's do when they die but is this a sign the unit is dying or is there a reset or fix for this issue? I've restarted the car, turned car off opened door closed door give it a few mins (albeit not enough to fully power down due to going to work) and restarted yet the lights are only on half brightness.

There is no warning on the dash about it or anything else to clue me into the issue apart from visually noticing it.

I've recently fit some LED dogs and indicators to the car but this was over a week ago now and the issue has only happened today (I know as I have a habit of checking out my car in reflections and drive alot of miles every day)

To chase this up, I've reset ECU by disconnecting battery, I've reset BCM by flashing brights 5x and brake 3x, I've unplugged the headlight units and plugged them back in... When I unplugged em and waited a few seconds and plugged back in, the DRL went to full brightness but almost instantly dimmed again.... Unless anyone knows better about a fault that makes this fixable then I assume it means the led units are dying and lowering power to extend life and prevent overheating/fire... The bad thing is a non working DRL from factory is an MOT failure in the UK, forcing me to buy new headlamps... The pair of them from ford WITH a discount sets me back £1,750 just for the units, I'm hoping it would be plug and play with new units and no coding need doing as I am not versed in forscan YET and I'll be f#*ked if I'm paying probably another £400 in "labour" on top for the dealership to do it... Can anyone please advise?

You can buy used headlights.  Scrapyards must be full of Mk3.5 Focus' by now.

Personally I would remove the mods that you added.  Modern lights work on a sort of voltage return system to check how many lights are working on the circuit.  If that voltage has been altered it could be affecting the LEDs.

I would also fully charge the battery as LEDs can be badly affected by battery voltage, despite being very low consumers themselves.

Hey, i just got similar issue, and i also found the cause on my drl atleast.

The issue itself was that the drl board inside the light was slightly loose so it bled some light inside the housing.

I just used some quick setting glue, and a stick to apply. kinda hard to reach with the tube itself.

Didnt take any pictures but hope this helps, and i can sort pictures later if u want
