58 Plate Focus ST

Featured Replies

I have a 2.5 petrol 2008 plate focus ST I was driving along when the car just randomly cut out and wouldn't start again and now shows Engine and Transmission Malfunction when attempting to start the vehicle

When you get in the car to try and start it there's no sound or anything to indicate its trying to turn but the lights will appear on the cluster and the immobiliser is flashing red faster then normal.

I have tried to plug a diagnostic machine in but it's not communicating to the vehicle at all however I have had the BCM/Cluster and ECU tested and there is communication there, battery has been charged and still solved anything

Any help or advise will be great!

Instrument Cluster Fault.

If it's not communicating it can't tell you if there's any issues.

Have you only had the cluster tested or have you had it actually repaired? The facelift Mk2 unit in particular very commonly suffers from cracked connector joints on the wiring connector. These cracks are tiny and circular around the joint. At any given moment the two halves could have good contact or poor contact or no contact, depending on environmental temperature and tiny movement of the cable and such. It may have had perfectly good CAN bus communications on a bench, but that doesn't prove whether or not cracks are there that could open up and cause problems while in actual use. It's rather a waste of time testing, you've got to strip it down and look at the condition of the actual joints.

Another thing to check is the ignition switch (behind the ignition barrel).

Quick check, my son’s 2008 ST came back to life after hitting the top of the dash above the cluster with his hand. Drove it for 100 miles doing this every couple of miles. £100 cluster refurb cured.
